Moritz has been absent from the social scene on the Island for quite some time, now. Since Melchior vanished, Moritz has retreated into himself, barely even speaking to his new roommate. He's stopped going to his classes, stopped turning in his work, stopped going to his meetings with Dr. Sweets. He'd almost completely forgotten about his birthday.

Johanna didn't want to get out of bed, she didn't want to rush to dress, she especially didn't want to wear any of the still, too big, too heavy dresses that her drawers held. Unimpressed with James' attitude to the fun of being young again and also because it would be weird to share with a boy when you're twelve, Elizabeth spends the night with Johanna discussing Halloween and books and puzzling over why James has reacted so badly to the island trick.
